Listening Assignment: Eurovision Song Contest
Choir Students,
I hope you had a lovely Easter Weekend! This week, I figured we should do something a little different for our class. This week, we're going to be doing a bit of an international listening exercise. So here's a little bit of background:
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual event held by the European Broadcast Union. Since 1956, they have invited countries to send in an original song to be performed live on television for all of Europe. In some countries, they hold contests to pick the song. In other countries, the TV broadcast companies pick the song. They all get together for one big grand final performance. The winner is determined by using a panel of judges from each country, and by letting viewers vote from home. The only restriction is that you can't vote for your own country's song!
In 2019, the Eurovision Grand Final was viewed live by 182 million people. That's twice as many people that watched the Super Bowl this year! Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus Outbreak, the Grand Final had to be cancelled this year. However, we still got a song for each country.
The thing is, there are 41 countries that compete for this. That's 41 different songs! Also, this includes Israel and Australia... which aren't in Europe. The good news for you is that most of the songs are in English! I've tried to narrow down the list to about 20 songs you might like, which are also "school appropriate" based on the music video or lyrics. If you want the full playlist unedited, click here.
Your assignment is to listen to some songs, pick your favorite, and tell me why you like it! You also have to tell me if it reminds you of any musical artist that you already listen to. Also, tell me one song that you absolutely HATE, and tell me why! There are many different styles, especially if you explore the full 41 songs!
Submit your answers by filling out this Google Form! The songs that get the Top 5 votes will move on to next week's assignment. Bonus points will be awarded on your grade if you can guess one of my Top 3 Songs.
Here's the list I have for you. Feel free to choose one from the larger playlist! Get it done by Monday!

Hello 5th Grade Choir!
This week, I have a singing assignment for your to do. This is a brand new song! Take a listen to the full song:
The Lord is My Shepherd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLxdb3ov-zE
Your job is to learn the melody of the song! We're going to try to create a "virtual choir" with the middle school. I'd like for you to practice for 15-30 minutes every day. On Friday, record yourself singing it and email the recording to me! I'll send back some notes and we'll keep improving on it until we have a more finished recording!
Happy singing!
